At Phil we’re all about expanding our horizons. Rethinking day-to-day issues is key to a sustainable future. 

Urban areas around the world are growing rapidly. Where so many people live and work in close proximity, more and more food will be needed. The many mouths to feed force us to adapt. Because of this we need a bigger workforce, the ability to recycle water, and efficient new energy and water flows. It’s time to create sustainable food production, green and clean neighborhoods and short, decentralized supply chains. These ingredients will transform cities into drivers of sustainability and radical innovation: Sustainable Urban Deltas.

From the Netherlands to the world

Our own visionary mastermind, Priva CEO Meiny Prins, got inspired to set up the Sustainable Urban Delta initiative. With this personal project, Meiny wants to inspire people by showing that we can create a new business model as a country, establishing sustainable societies in metropolitan areas here and throughout the world.

The Netherlands can make an international statement, but to do that we have to develop a new vision together. Together we must create a new future outlook for our country, as the ‘greenest city in the world’.

Indoor farms in the heart of a city

Infinite Acres is a great example of the thinking behind the Sustainable Urban Delta initiative. This past year, Priva joined forces with 80 Acres Farms and Ocado Group to set up Infinite Acres. This joint venture makes most of Priva’s knowledge and combines it with vertical farming know-how (80 Acres Farms) and IT solutions (Ocado Group). Infinite Acres works to produce local food in densely populated areas, in controlled indoor farms. The outcome: reduced food waste and fewer food shortages around the world.

“Indoor farming”...it almost sounds nostalgic, doesn’t it? Yet this sector that grows fresh food in enclosed buildings is far from rustic. It’s all about precision in these high-tech facilities. Circumstances such as light, air, water and nutrition can be controlled extremely accurately, and tailored to each type of crop. This allows the grower to determine the quality and size of the harvest in advance, along with the ability to adjust it to the company's objectives and the needs of the target market. And because there are no external weather influences at an indoor farm, food can be produced anywhere in the world.

Especially in the ever-growing metropolises, where the lack of suitable and affordable space is a growing problem, it’s a great benefit that food can now be produced close to where people live. In addition, indoor farming reduces the number of major environmental problems, as minimal water is needed, and most of the water can be reused. What’s next?
